And the West is History

100 years ago: “The Rev. Father Nolan, of New York, came down from Silverton and left on the Southern for Sheridan, Wyo., where he expects to conduct a mission.”

75 years ago: “Paul and Roy Zufelt of Redmesa were arrested on charges of dynamiting fish in the La Plata River on Redmesa. It is understood that several others were involved in the affair and warrants for them have been issued.”

50 years ago: “The Rodney Horrocks received lumber cut to different lengths from Herb Williams lumber yard, peat moss from Hyde Nursery, and roofing. The trucks drove up, but before they could be unloaded the Horrocks stopped delivery. They hadn’t ordered any of the material. Some one – ‘A young voice,’ the merchants reported to the sheriff’s office – ordered the items from Durango merchants to be delivered to the Horrocks residence. And that’s why the sheriff is urging Durango merchants to check back on all telephone orders.”

25 years ago: “With three-quarters of its pasture land gone due to drought, parched La Plata County is asking the state to declare a disaster area and thereby qualify for federal assistance. Archuleta and Montezuma counties also are applying for the designation. Dolores County and five other counties already have received the designation.”
