50 Years Ago: “Mr. and Mrs. Don Hosner, 2107 Eastlawn, have stopped putting their garbage can out the night before the trash collection for the past few weeks because they thought the dogs were tipping it over. When Hosner returned from Mass around 7:15 Ash Wednesday, there was a big bull elk nosing around the can that had been left out in the yard of Mrs. Jeanene Dunlap at 2168 Crestview Drive. Now the question in Hosner’s mind is, was it really dogs or elk that have been so nosey?”
25 years ago: “The state health department is failing to exercise its authority to force a Durango woman to clean up her smelly house, the woman’s neighbors say. Violet Kolz, who lives at 663 East Fifth Ave., was found guilty in Municipal Court on Thursday for accumulation of refuse and nuisance from odor. Witnesses who testified at the four-hour trial said Kolz’s house exudes an odor that ‘smells like death.’ The odor is so repugnant that neighbors cannot enjoy their property, witnesses said.”
