100 years ago: “C.F. Davis went up to Silverton to join the other painters employed by George Goodman on contract work there. The work includes the painting of several dwellings and the buildings of the Western Colorado Power Co. both in Silverton and at Tacoma. The work probably will extend into the late fall.”
75 years ago: “Good will greeters have noticed a slight increase during the past week in tourists visiting Durango. States leading the visitors parade are Arizona, California, Texas, Oklahoma and Illinois.”
50 years ago: “Striking members of Local 592, International Assn. of Machinists AFL-CIO, returned to work at the Telluride Iron Works, ending a one-week strike at the plant located just south of Durango on the La Posta Road. Pickets at the plant said the union was asking for a 15 cent per hour increase over the rate of $2.31 previously in effect. Eight employes were involved in the strike that began July 6.”
25 years ago: “Fort Lewis College President Emeritus Rexer Berndt will lend his name to the campus building where he spent 15½ years as leader of the institution. The Academic/Administration Building was renamed as Berndt Hall. ... Berndt joined the college as its third president in July 1969. He retired in December 1984.”
