100 years ago: “Phil Dentenger, the old-time prospector and manager, who recently returned from old Mexico, has opened up his mine in the Needles, and already has about a carload of ore sacked at the tunnel mouth. It will begin shipping within a short time.”
75 years ago: “The ranch owned by Mrs. Doris Shaw in the Pine River Valley was bought by Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Colley of Trinidad, Colorado.”
50 years ago: “When the Durango High School band went swimming in the Pacific Ocean at Seaside, Oregan, it was at the end of the Lewis and Clark trail, marking the farthest west camp of the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1805-1806. Many of Durango young people were seeing the Pacific Ocean for the first time. It was cold and windy at the beach and few good sized breakers could be seen.”
25 years ago: “Durango City Council members like the idea of a new park at U.S. Highways 160 and 550 welcoming tourists to the San Juan Skyway. They just have to figure out how to help pay for it. The U.S. Forest Service has proposed a $362,000 project to build a landscaped ‘Durango’ sign, informational displays and some picnic tables in a small park on Colorado Department of Highway’s property at the highway intersection.”
