100 years ago: SILVERTON – “Lee Tinsley has been working all winter on his property near Chattanooga, and has opened up some nice looking ore there. The ore contains considerable lead and zinc, and should be an ore readily handled with the present milling methods. The ore body is a good looking one, and promises to be a good one not only for value but also for size.”
75 years ago: “The city of Durango is beginning a campaign to clean-up the delinquent dog tax yet unpaid but due June 1. Some 200 people are listed as owners of dogs in Durango – among them some of the ‘veddy, veddy prominent’ – who have not paid the annual tax on their canines.”
50 years ago: “Betsy Ross would approve. White sportswear will dominate the summer fashion scene in the mountains, in town and country. It looks like a ‘patriotic’ season as accessory accents will be in red, white and blue. Flamboyant stripped scarves, kerchiefs in geometric prints, as well as belts and jewels, will be boldly tricolored.”
25 years ago: “A tubing accident on the Animas River prompted the Durango Police Department to close the river through Durango to inner tubes, paddle boards, air mattresses and personal inflatable boats and rafts. ... The closure is expected to be only for a brief period while the river is running at its peak. The Animas River was running at 4,240 cubic feet per second.”
