And the West is History

100 years ago: “Mrs. Olga Little was down from the Mayday country on a business and supply buying trip in connection with her packing contracts, trading incidentally at the Golden Rule Store for necessary dry goods and merchandise.”

75 years ago: “Workmen at the Justesen-Harrington cocktail lounge are fighting their way out of a wilderness of bamboo today. Interior decorations of the lounge are being done in bamboo. Bamboo poles litter the floor, and since the material is difficult to saw and shape for the various uses proposed it is truly an oriental puzzle.”

50 years ago: “City officials said they plan to proceed as scheduled on the proposed West Side Park despite the fact the Colorado Game, Fish and Parks Commission voted to commit roughly $25,000 for the project instead of the $42,250 authorized. Commissioners did not close the door on the possibility of providing more funds for the long-sought project, but it would appear that the $25,000 would be the total for this year.”

25 years ago: “Record temperatures have baked Durango for the last two days as unseasonably hot weather is expected to continue this week with no rain forecast. ... Sunday’s 98-degree high broke the record of 94 set in 1902 and sent 260 people into Durango’s municipal swimming pool.”
