100 years ago: “Two bushels of fine red and pink roses, the largest ever seen in that party of the city, were received by Mrs. Ross McGirr from her niece, Miss Lucy McGirr, who went down to Aztec to spend a few weeks. The roses were picked in the garden of Miss McGirr’s aunt in Aztec and came in on the Farmington train.”
75 years ago: “With most of them wearing old clothes Rotarians and guests from neighboring town and cities were entertained by the Silverton Rotary Club at a more than 2-mile high party which was made possible by the hearty cooperation of the Shenondoah-Dives Mining Co.” The group rode in the tram buckets to the mine at 11,300 feet.
50 years ago: “Where it’s confined, the Animas River, fed by increasing snow melt in the high country, is roaring. Through much of the Animas Valley, where it’s out of its banks, the stream is sluggish, and there is little appreciable damage from current. The reading at the Western Colorado Power Co. plant at 15th Street was a modest 6.12 feet, technically over the flood stage.”
25 years go: “The U.S. House included $13.4 million for construction of the Animas-La Plata Project in an approved funding bill, U.S. Rep. Ben Nighthorse Campbell said. ... Campbell said language is to be included in the spending bill that would allow construction activity to proceed on the Animas-La Plata during negotiations over the endangered Colorado squawfish.”
