And the West is History

100 years ago: “A hitherto unexplored ruin of the ancient cliff dwellers was discovered in the Mesa Verde Park by Rangers Fred Jeep and Clint Scarf, who worked for over a week to get into the cave. The newly found ruin is 4 miles southwest of Spruce Tree Camp.”

75 years ago: “CCC camp SCS8-N now at San Ysidro, New Mexico will be moved to Durango. Moving to Durango has been delayed because the camp was to have been disbanded had the proposed CCC corps decrease of 275 camps gone through as recommended by the bureau of the budget. Congressional action interceded in behalf of the corps maintaining the number of camps without any decrease.”

50 years ago: An advertisement for Lam Motor Co., U.S. Highway 160 south, read: “C’mon, Charlie. You tried the new dandruff shampoo, switched deodorants, even changed your tailor. Now get with it. See your Plymouth Dealer. Drive a great big, beautiful Plymouth Fury. Then fight ’em off. See your Plymouth Dealer now.”

25 years ago: “The Durango Police Department has lifted its 10-day ban of inner tubes, paddle boards, air mattresses and personal inflatable boats and rafts on the Animas River through Durango.”
