And the West is History

100 years ago: “J.E. Tiffany, the civil engineer, was a returning passenger on the Southern, coming in from the Hesperus country to spend Sunday where he has a large choice of churches.”

75 years ago: This item appeared in the section called Animas Valley News: “Residents of the valley are making considerable use of the auction sales held in Durango each week, in disposing of surplus stock and in buying other stock that they need.”

50 years ago: “Southwest Colorado will close most of its doors Monday, the day of President John Kennedy’s funeral. Schools throughout the area will close, and Fort Lewis College will have no classes throughout Monday.”

25 years ago: “Bakers Bridge over the Animas River 13 miles north of Durango will stay open this winter. The La Plata County Commissioners voted to delay replacement of the 50-year-old obsolete bridge until March 15 and keep the road over the bridge open through the winter months. The decision represents a victory for residents of the area who protested the commissioners’ earlier decision to leave the construction schedule up to the contractor, which could have meant the bridge would be torn down immediately.”
