100 years ago: “Arrivals from Silverton report a heavy frost there, and say it was so cold all the fireworks were frozen up. The Silverton miners all came down here to celebrate or disperse to celebrating cities.”
75 years ago: “Stop signs have been placed at the intersections of 7th and 8th streets with 8th Avenue. Failure to observe the stop signs placed to reduce the dangerous traffic condition existing on 8th Avenue, will bring prosecution.”
50 years ago: This appeared in the section called Allison-Arboles News: “The Navajo Lake has been steadily rising even though it is spreading over a lot of flat land. The land between the San Juan and Piedra rivers that was part of the John Walker farm has slipped from sight under water this past week. More people are boating and fishing on the lake every week.”
25 years ago: “The July 4 celebrations in Bayfield and Vallecito went off without a hitch with ‘some of the largest crowds in years,’ say organizers, although carloads of people missed Vallecito’s fireworks show because they stayed at the wrong end of the lake.”
