And the West is History

By Sarah Silvernail

Herald Staff Writer

100 years ago: “Yesterday we landed a 50-cent express package in Hesperus for 15 cents. This parcel post is a great, grand exterminator of railroad robbery and merits the patronage of all whose shipments do not exceed 20 pounds.”

75 years ago: An advertisement read, “It’s always cool. The Silver Dollar. Durango’s only exclusive draft beer dispensary. Fine wines and sandwiches. Uncle Sam’s P.O. next door. 1040 Main Ave.”

50 years ago: “Shooting for enrollment of 900 students or better for the fall trimester, registration is underway on the Fort Lewis College campus.”

25 years ago: “A woman whose house on Florida Road cracked apart when road construction caused the ground beneath it to slough is $75,000 richer and one house poorer after settling a lawsuit with La Plata County. In the settlement, the county purchased the woman’s 1,800-square-foot house and two acres 2½ miles east of Durango. In return, the woman agreed to move immediately, and she released the county from all future damage claims.”
