100 years ago: “‘Billy’ Barnett went over to the La Platas to resume his work of prospecting in that country. ‘Billy’ is not a diamond drill operator, but – he sure knows how to pound the other kind with a single jack.”
75 years ago: “With the spreading of the last load of gravel, the construction job on Highway 160 east of Bayfield is practically completed. A few little odds and ends remain yet to be done; but the road is open for travel.”
50 years ago: “Workmen began pouring concrete for the third story of the La Plata County Jail addition to the courthouse. The builder has told architects that when this pouring is completed, work crews now employed at Fort Lewis College will be shifted to the jail building to hasten its completion.”
25 years ago: “Wednesday will be the last day of work for long-time Strater Hotel restaurant hostess Denna Lang who is retiring after 26 years of service. She has seen the restaurant change from the Terrace to the Opera House to the current Henry’s. The Barker family, owners of the Strater, held a surprise party for the retiring hostess.”
