100 years ago: “Messrs. Graden, Sloan and Whittaker are home from the Chattanooga reunion and visit to the battlefields upon which they struggled for supremacy during the Civil War. Graden says he saw many Fifty-Second Ohio Infantry headstones in the Chickamauga Cemetery, as many of his regiment fell in that engagement.”
75 years ago: “With 40 men working on the construction job, Wood, Morgan and Burnett finished the pouring of concrete on the east abutment of the new highway bridge over the Animas River west of Durango.”
50 years ago: “Attendance is expected to exceed 400 at the second annual Fort Lewis Band Day scheduled for Oct. 12 on the College Heights campus.”
25 years ago: “This appears to be the year that city officials will attempt to ‘wind down’ Durango’s rowdy Halloween celebration. Police Chief Chris Wiggins said he will recommend against closing a section of Main Avenue. There are no plans by the city or by the Durango Area Chamber Resort Association to sponsor bands or costume contests. Wiggins and City Manager Bob Ledger said they believe the raucous celebration has grown worse during the past two years, when events were organized and funded with city money.”
