And the West is History

100 years Ago: “Quite a party of pleasure seekers journeyed to Electra Lake via the mixed train, bound for a last whirl at the fishing and hunting ere winter’s icy hand grips the country.”

75 years ago: “Among the cultural resources of the San Juan Basin the library of the Fort Lewis branch of Colorado State College occupies a prominent place. General attention was first called to it two years ago when the Carnegie corporation found it worthy of a grant to be used through a period of three years for the purchase of new books. Today it presents a collection of reference material in its periodicals of the current American and world scenes.”

50 years ago: “A wet August and early September, coupled – with a near-record mild fall, are giving farmers their greatest harvest in La Plata County’s history.”

25 years ago: “Durango City Council members agreed to block Main Avenue so merchants can sponsor a street dance and costume contest on Halloween. City officials hope to tone down this year’s celebration and had recommended leaving Main open as one way to break up the annual party. But downtown merchants told the council that they still want to try some organized events, sticking with the idea of the past three years that some organization is better than none.”
