100 years Ago: “The Durango Motor Car Company has a Chalmers ‘6’ and a ‘36’ en route from the Detroit factory and are looking for both at an early date. The ‘6’ goes to Dr. Turrell and the ‘36’ will be used by the Foley Brothers in their garage.”
75 years ago: “On Oct. 21 the Animas Valley will hold its fourth annual Harvest Festival with its abundance of superb agriculture products, home economics, and school exhibits. Always an exceptionally fine show, the Animas Valley has outdone itself this year in providing a program of even greater interest and attractions.”
50 years ago: Pagosa Springs – “The State Industrial Commission has ordered officials of the San Juan Lumber Mill in Pagosa to pay employees more than $100,000 in overdue paychecks. More than 100 employees of the mill walked off the job because banks refused to honor paychecks on Sept. 25 and no paychecks were issued Oct. 10.”
25 years ago: “Police seized another 2,260 live marijuana plants from the Silverton home of a retired dentist. Also confiscated were about 40 pounds of dried marijuana. The 62 year old dentist was arrested after Durango police found more than 1,700 marijuana plants in his former dental office. The marijuana-growing operation was spread through seven rooms of the house in Silverton.”
