100 years Ago: “Jack Smith and John Ryan of the Strater Hotel culinary staff, to satisfy a wager on national baseball, were hitched up to the Strater’s one-passenger, two-cylinder machine and wheeled Miss Edith a ‘joy ride’ of her life. All was lovely until the spark plug got mixed up with the carburetor, then there was more trouble in a day precinct.”
75 years ago: “Durango police will from now on make a special effort to enforce paragraph 41 of the city ordinance 627, which specifies that vehicular traffic on streets near Durango public schools must slow down to a speed of not more than 15 miles per hour.”
50 years ago: “Tomatoes and some flowers looked pretty sick this morning as the temperature dropped to 26 degrees. Six degrees below freezing. But Oct. 14 for the first frost is some kind of record.”
25 years ago: “Plagued by a lack of participation in the past, Friday’s homecoming parade for Fort Lewis College will show a little more pizazz with three times the number of entries as in years past. This year’s theme is ‘Aloha Mavericks,’ in reference to FLC’s rival football team, the Mesa College Mavericks.”
