And the West is History

100 years ago: “Rapid progress is being made in the movement to establish in this city a completely-equipped moving picture production plant, and the interest is increasing daily.”

75 years ago: “Today marks the opening of the four-day run of the San Juan Basin Exposition Seed & Poultry Show in Durango.”

50 years ago: “‘As a rule we don’t get snow until about Christmas time,’ said W.W. (Billy) Davies, Durango’s veteran weather observer. But this weekend the Southwest did. ... Wolf Creek Pass was in the thoughts of many Durangoans Saturday night after the Durango High School-Aurora-Central football game in Aurora. The football team stayed in Denver, but two bus loads of Pep club girls arrived home about 4 a.m. Sunday. One of the bus drivers kept in touch with the state patrol throughout the weekend. When the pep club buses were ready to cross Wolf Creek, they were met by two patrol cars and two snowplows. Parents were registering their gratitude for the care given the girls by the highway department and the patrol.”

25 years ago: “School District 9-R is considering belting its spanking policy out the door. Two school officials suggested that the school board eliminate corporal punishment from the district’s discipline policy. The board will vote on this proposed change of policy during the December meeting.”
