And the West is History

100 years ago: “Ed McCaw, of the Florida Mesa, broke his regular schedule of coming in on Saturday and came to the city yesterday to see how the town looked in the middle of the week.”

75 years ago: “The state fish hatchery at Durango now has 6 feet of additional water – double the former available supply. This additional water will make it possible to have plenty of retaining ponds right there at the hatchery where trained hatchery men can feed the fish up to catching size before distributing them in San Juan Basin streams.”

50 years ago: The following appeared in the section titled: Girl About Town. “Best wishes to Wayne Powell, a member of the Durango ski patrol, who broke his ankle skiing at Hesperus. Powell will be out on crutches next week, friends say, since the broken bone is not one of those which bears weight.”

25 years ago: “As of Sunday, Durango will grow by 1.6 miles and some 500 residents. Annexation of the West Animas area – one of the largest expansions of the city limits in the past 10 years – takes effect on Jan. 1. The area incorporates: 112 acres; 174 dwellings; 14 businesses; 529 people and 1.6 miles.”
