100 years ago: “Bill Shaffer, of the Antlers, left for a two or three day’s trip to his mining properties up Deadwood Gulch in the La Platas. Bill has some men working his place and is taking them out some cough medicine and buckwheat cakes.”
75 years ago: “Accurate tripping of the older dance steps won first honors for the Florida Grange in the old-time dance contest at the Masonic Hall – a feature of the San Juan Basin Exposition Seed and Poultry Show being held in Durango.”
50 years ago: “Modernization funds – it is not known how much – will become available after July 1 for modernization of Colorado hospitals which have grown functional and structurally obsolete over the years. These funds could have implications for Mercy hospital which long has wanted to rebuild its old wing. The hospital services section of the department will have $39,000 of Hill Burton funds to make a survey after Jan. 1.”
25 years ago: “Sheriff’s deputies and federal agents found an underground greenhouse when they raided a farm south of Oxford and confiscated about 500 marijuana plants. In all, the search on County Road 311 turned up an estimated $500,000 worth of marijuana in a ‘total growing, processing and shipping operation.’ It was the sixth large marijuana-growing operation – five in La Plata County and one in San Juan County – busted by LEADS (Law Enforcement Against Drugs) investigators.”
