50 years ago: The Chamber of Commerce has collected a total of $427.50 for Christmas decorations in Durango, according to Mike Valentine, Chamber manager. “This is far short of our $1,000 goal,” Valentine added. Over 10,000 feet of wire has been ordered on a very tight budget. Valentine stated that any delinquent Chamber dues would be appreciated at this time to aid the Christmas drive which will continue.
25 years ago: A fire last week that inflicted heavy damage to an East Third Avenue apartment complex has illustrated the need for a rental property habitability code, officials said. Drafting such a code is the current focus of the Durango Housing Task Force, which expects to have a preliminary document ready by the end of January. Greg Hoch, director of planning and community development for the city of Durango, will draft the preliminary document, which the task force will review and amend.
