And the West is History

100 years ago: “Sheriff Fassbinder went to Ignacio today after a man who left the Savoy without the formality of paying his board bill and failed to show any intention of doing so.”

75 years ago: ”’Wide open’ gambling in Durango was demanded by Nate Stein, local clothing merchant, when he appeared before the Durango Round Table last night to ask that the organization sponsor such a move. Mr. Stein told the Round Table that last Friday’s raids which confiscated much gambling equipment here would have little effect but were unjustified.”

50 years ago: “At the request of the post office department, city crews this morning changed the location of the courtesy mailbox in front of the Durango post office, according to City Manager Robert Rank. The box was to be moved from its position at the corner of Main Avenue and 11th Street to the post office driveway.”

25 years ago: “The Iron Horse itself began running last weekend, so the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic can’t be far behind. Sure enough, the 20th anniversary of the Durango to Silverton race is May 25 and 26, $30,000 in prize money will be up for grabs, and an even bigger emphasis to mountain biking will highlight the largest and oldest bicycle race in Colorado.”
