50 years ago: Fort Lewis College, now in its fifth year as a degree-granting liberal arts college, has emerged as a pioneer in year-round education in Colorado and as a significant factor in the economy of Durango, the San Juan Basin and Colorado. The college operates on a trimester system, with the fall trimester beginning in September and ending in December; the winter trimester beginning in January and ending in April; and the spring trimester beginning in May and ending in August.
25 years ago: For the third time, the City Council failed to reach consensus Tuesday on who will be able to nominate properties for a historic register, forcing the issue to a formal council vote next week. The five councilors have been wrangling over whether to alter portions of the Historic Preservation Ordinance, adopted last year but not yet implemented.
