And the West is History

100 years ago: “Last Saturday night, Mr. Hughes and the boys entertained the Literary Society at the Hughes home. The literary program was followed by the singing of old time songs, and then ice cream. Watermelon soon made an appearance. All had a thoroughly good time and vote Mr. Hughes and the boys to be royal entertainers.”

75 YEARS AGO: “Two Durango high school boys, one a senior, the other a junior, quietly took their leave of home, friends and school this week and are now out on a lone expedition to see the wonders of the great world.”

50 YEARS AGO: “Flora Albo, 35, drove right through the window of the Plaza Safeway while trying to learn to drive. Jose Trujillo, owner of the car, told police he was teaching Mrs. Albo to drive and that she had put the gear in a forward position instead of reverse. No one inside the store was injured by the flying glass. Mrs. Albo fainted.”
