100 years ago: “An institution that should be fostered and encouraged by the farmers of the San Juan Basin is the Fort Lewis Agricultural School. It needs the united support of all who have the interest of this section at heart.”
75 years ago: “Tonight’s world’s heavyweight title bout between Champion Joe Louis and Challenger John Henry Lewis, will be broadcast over the National Broadcasting System. The best bet for Durango fans is to tune in on KOA at Denver.”
50 years ago: The following appeared in the section titled Girl About Town: “William Kingsbury Pitcher – better known to San Juan county old timers as King Pitcher – is the subject of a long feature in the December issue of Ski Magazine. He’s called ‘Resort creator, flier, rancher, VIP’s skimeister, and New Mexican extraordinaire. Pitcher is a grandson of the late Otto Mears who built many of the west’s narrow gauge railroads, including the D&RGW line between Durango and Silverton.”
25 years ago: “School board members and representatives of the Bayfield Education Association butted heads over a teacher survey that called for more communication between staff members and the school board, and more involvement among teachers in the district’s decision-making process. ”
