And the West is History

100 years ago: An advertisement read: “Dandruff causes a feverish irritation of the scalp, the hair roots shrink, loosen and then the hair comes out fast. To stop falling hair at once and rid the scalp of every particle of dandruff, get a 25-cent bottle of Danderine at any drug store, pour a little on your hand and rub well into the scalp. After a few applications all dandruff disappears and the hair stops coming out.”

75 years ago: “Word was received by Durango friends that W.B. Pennington, one of the pioneer photographers in Durango and the San Juan Basin, had passed away at Alhambra, California. Pennington, who established the Pennington studio in Durango more than 30 years ago, went to California about five years ago in the interests of his health.”

50 years ago: “Officials of the San Juan National Forest have announced the completion of feasibility studies for a proposed Purgatory Ski Area. The proposed area is located near the Columbine Ranger station about 25 miles north of Durango just off U.S. 550. The feasibility studies conducted by the Forest Service and the proponent of the area are aimed at first phase development which includes public use by December of 1965.”

25 years ago: “Durango cable viewers won’t be losing their Denver news despite being startled in the middle of the 10 p.m. Monday news when Channel 21 was suddenly switched to a New Mexico station. Cable viewers and members of an informal committee that formed more than a year ago to ensure Durango receives Denver news were under the impression that an earlier agreement guaranteeing reception had been canceled. Better access to Denver news, particularly coverage of the Legislature, was one of the main reasons the task force sought the Denver stations in July 1988.”
