And the West is History

100 years ago: “Sheep shearing is the order of the day in nearly every flock in the San Juan Basin. The returns from the wool shipments will bring a deluge of prosperity to the owners.”

75 years ago: “Escape from the snow into the pleasures of the warm sea breeze is a pleasure that is being welcomed by Mr. and Mrs. K.S. Rucker, who left for LaJolla, California, where they will enjoy a month’s vacation.”

50 years ago: The Kiva was showing “The Great Race” starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood.

25 years ago: “It was a close call for Mike Jones, assistant chief of the Animas Fire District, who nearly plunged into a creek, along with is fire truck, after the vehicle broke through a bridge at 2149 County Road 309A. Jones was responding to a grass fire at the residence. When he began crossing the bridge, he said he could hear a loud creak, then the wheels broke through. The bridge is a privately owned access to the property. Firefighters were able to access another bridge to reach the fire and put it out. Two tow trucks responded to help remove the truck from the dilapidated bridge.”
