And the West is History

100 years ago: The Chapman Hardware Co. set up a two-cylinder Bain for J.D. Graves of Cedar Hill.

75 years ago: The “chilled breath of approaching winter” spurred Nazis to “violent new efforts to advance in southern Russia.” In “torn and battered” Stalingrad, German and Russian forces engaged in “heavy assaults” in the northern part of the city, “where the enemy has been striking hard to reach the Volga.”

50 years ago: For 58 minutes, Durango firemen used shovels to put out a fire along the banks of the Animas River in the area that used to be Webb Town. Nothing was lost, besides the trees, brush and grass that burned.

25 years ago: A man found a gun on the ground near Seventh Street and East Fifth Avenue and reported it to police. The firearm had been stolen from a resident’s truck some time before and was returned to the owner.
