75 years ago: “In an accident caused by the narrowness of the road, a car driven by Charles Colvin of Durango plunged into the Florida River near Nelson’s sawmill. The occupants escaped without injury.”
50 years ago: “One of Durango’s old landmarks, the tower clock atop the old courthouse, has come down. The hole where the clock face used to be stands empty as the clock works and the big bell have been hauled off to the fairgrounds to be stored until such time as it may be possible to put it up again, possibly on the south wing of the new courthouse when it is completed. The 73-year-old building is being torn down and should be completely removed from the premises within 90 days.”
25 years ago: “Fort Lewis College students face a 6 percent tuition hike for the 1989-90 academic year – the third increase in as many years – if an FLC budget proposal is approved by the State Board of Agriculture. ... Despite the raise, Fort Lewis’ tuition remains fifth-lowest of Colorado’s public colleges and universities, officials said.”
