And the West is History

100 years ago: “With the closing of the agricultural school at Fort Lewis for the Christmas holiday, a number of students arrived in town on their way home for the gift-giving season. The school reopens Jan. 4.”

75 years ago: “The new ski towback, which has been under construction for several weeks, has been completed and is now ready for operation. The towback is located on the highway north of Durango about one mile south of the Electra Lake turnoff.”

50 years ago: “Color television pictures made along the route of the Silverton narrow gauge train in August by a Jack Douglas Production crew will be shown on KOAT-TV, Albuquerque. The train pictures are part of the chapter entitled The Call of Colorado, in the Jack Douglas America series that is being shown worldwide.”

25 years ago: “Paradigm Inc.’s latest attempt to build a 120-bed nursing home has run into opposition from residents on the road to one of Durango’s upscale subdivisions. The 40,000-square-foot building is proposed for a 42-acre parcel at Florida Road and Timberline Drive, a private road leading to Timberline View Estates.”
