And the West is History

100 years ago: Hank Willis, “the obliging conductor on the Eastern,” was pulling out from “a small burg down the line” when he saw a woman “running as fast as she could toward the train.” Hank pulled the air cord and stopped the train to help the woman, who “came on at high speed and was breathing like a coffee grinder.”

75 years ago: According to advice from Denver, the approaching winter was supposed to be one where members of the Legislature were “going to have to pay high for hotel rooms.”

50 years ago: Governors of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah, and “a crush of other dignitaries,” were in Durango for lunch before departing to the Four Corners Monument to activate the Four Corners Regional Economic Development Commission.

25 years ago: Two 18-year-olds and a 20-year-old were told to be quiet by police officers after someone reported that they were howling at the moon.
