100 years ago: Word from Aztec, “the fruit belt metropolis directly to the south of us,” brought to light a story that was “filled with romance and tragedy.” According to informant George Lively, a German spy was found on a Navy training ship concealing what was discovered to be high explosive bombs in his bunk.
50 years ago: The new schedule for Mesa Verde National Park was effected and would remain in effect through Sept. 16, according to Jack Rudy, chief park archaeologist.
