And the West is History

100 years ago: The Wells Fargo Express Co. turned over its Denver and Rio Grande, Rio Grande Southern and Western Pacific railway offices to the Adams Express Co.

75 years ago: La Plata County suffered a severe teacher shortage on what was supposed to be the first week of school. Most schools’ start date was delayed a week, and at least four schools would not be able to open until instructors could be found.

50 years ago: Total rainfall in Durango during August was 3.71 inches, which was an increase of 0.87 of an inch from the previous year and the highest recorded in 15 years.

25 years ago: Although it was out of his control, La Plata County Sheriff Bill Gardner’s timing couldn’t have been much worse when he proposed a new tax to pay for incoming deputies. Colorado voters faced “the biggest and most complicated ballot in state history,” and La Plata County voters had to decide on a full range of local offices.
