100 years ago: Afraid that his grandmother might kill herself if he was called for active duty, “a considerate young man of a neighboring city” begged for exemption from army service. His argument was, “she is too young to die.”

75 years ago: Coordinator of inter-American affairs, Nelson Rockefeller, urged that United States products continue to be advertised in “the other Americas,” despite war restrictions. He said, “the problem of maintaining markets and good will must be solved thru the cooperation of the United States businessmen.”

50 years ago: Rep. Wayne Aspinall announced that the OEO approved the Neighborhood Youth Corps grant for the amount of $83,990. The grant was used to fund a year-long in-school program and a summer program for students.

25 years ago: A fountain at Robert Parker Gallery, 707 Main Ave., was vandalized, causing $1,500 damage.
