And the West is History

100 years ago: Joe Curtet, the “old reliable” from Hesperus, came into Durango “to get his name in the paper.” Also, he probably wouldn’t have expected his name to be in the paper again, 100 years later.

75 years ago: Attorney General Gail L. Ireland officially ruled that, “it is against the law to sell liquor to a minor in Colorado, and this applies in all establishments and whether the minor is accompanied by a parent or any other adult.”

50 years ago: A proposed increase in water rates in Durango was the focus of a public meeting, attended by City Council, the Finance Commission and the Water Commission.

25 years ago: Durango Police Department received a strange call from an 18-year-old man from Mesa, Ariz., who said he was being surrounded by 30 to 40 people at the railroad depot, and they “won’t let him leave town.”
