100 years ago: E.P. Wilson was “as proud as a bull pup with a new brass collar” about his cherry harvest, which was on display at “The Exchange.”
75 years ago: An announcement to “help save the nation’s fruit crop” offered citizens a way to get sugar in exchange for home-canned fruit. It said, “For canning you will get one pound of sugar for every four quarts of finished fruit you are putting up. You may can as much fruit as your family needs. And you may have an additional pound of sugar for each person in your family to make a small supply of jams and jellies and fruit butters.”
50 years ago: A 68-year-old man from Arriola was killed after being struck by a pickup while riding a horse six miles north of Cortez.
25 years ago: A man entered the Conoco gas station on 19th Street and Main Avenue and allegedly asked the clerk, “Would you freak out if I pulled a gun?” He then pulled a gun from the waistband of his pants, bought a six-pack of beer and a pop and left.
