And the West is History

100 years ago: “John Kellenberger, the wholesale liquor dealer, leaves for Trinidad, where he will endeavor to interest the strikers in the new grape smash instead of rifle cocktails.”

75 years ago: An advertisement for Erwin F. Burnett, optometrist, located in the Graden Building, read: “Mental Meanderings of Erwin Burnett. Hermosa District Animas Valley Attention. I have turned loose three wild hen turkeys and a gobbler in Hermosa Cannon back of our cabin. I request the cooperation of all neighbors in helping to protect them that we may get a nice wild turkey population in our cannon.”

50 years ago: “Pres. John F. Reed of Fort Lewis College has issued a special invitation to Durangoans and, in fact, all those interested in higher education in the San Juan Basin, to attend commencement exercises. ... A historic old bell, recent gift to the college from the William White family and the D&RGW railroad, will be rung to mark the official beginning of the commencement.”

25 years ago: “The answer, at least for now, is green. The city’s Design Review Board reconsidered the color of poles for historic streetlights and came up with the same answer: sage green. Board members described the color, which is now used on poles in the 500 block of Main Avenue as ‘subtly obscure’ and ‘a softer color.’”
