100 years ago: “With but part of the plant in operation, the new Graden packing house, the estimated cost of which will be $15,000, has in the week that it has been running, slaughtered over 300 hogs. No cattle or sheep have yet been handled at the plant.”
75 years ago: “Work on the Montezuma County Groundhog Reservoir project must start by Jan. 1, according to the contract for the project which was approved by PWA officials.”
50 years ago: “An old, tired, weary man left Durango yesterday on a long trip. He was cold but not hungry for he had eaten well. All he carried with him for the trip ahead was a well-worn bag with the initials ‘S.C.’ filled with food for his journey. ... Durango will miss him during the months ahead, but this time next year the old man will probably pass this way again. He’s been stopping here for many years.”
25 years ago: “Two Durango men buried seven hours Christmas evening in an avalanche next to Chapman Hill ski area are in good condition this morning in the intensive care unit at Mercy Medical Center. Passers-by dug Brett Woods, 24, and Keith Cathcart, 19, both of Durango, out from their icy tomb 6 to 7 feet below the surface.”
