And the West is History

100 years ago: “Roadmaster J. H. Tait expects to leave – if he can find all of his collar buttons, shirt studs, etc. on a 60 day trip that will take him as far east as Elmira, N.Y. Now, that is where the big reformatory is and Mr. Tait’s numerous friends sincerely hope that he won’t break into that institution or that other institution – married life, which some suspect is really the object of the trip.”

75 years ago: This appeared in the section titled Animas Valley News: “The pupils of the Waterfall School entertained the Trimble School at a Halloween Party. Jack Gensheer, Billy Morns and Patty McCormick were awarded prizes for the best costumes in the various groups. Games were played and at the end of the afternoon coca and cookies were served.”

50 years ago: “Olympic cross-country skiers will be filmed for showing on ABC TV network’s pre-Olympic programs. ... Tentative plans called for shooting cross-country skiing on Red Mountain Pass.”

25 years ago: “The Durango City Council included $30,000 in its 1989 budget for a marketing study that could serve as a yardstick for measuring the Durango Area Chamber Resort Association. ... The idea for the study comes from some lingering doubts among council members that DACRA is spending lodger’s tax funds in the best way. DACRA gets about $240,000 annually in lodger’s taxes through the City Council.”
