And the West is History

100 years ago: “Mr. and Mrs. O.F. Boyle moved from their residence on Third Avenue to the apartment over the Fulton Market on Main Avenue.”

75 years ago: “Fire of unknown origin completely destroyed the ranch home owned and occupied by the Charles L. Rhodes family at Bondad. At first Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes attempted to fight the fire by carrying water to the upstairs floor, but the smoke soon became so thick that Mr. Rhodes was nearly overcome before he could return to the lower floor and safety.”

50 years ago: “Floyd Gibble tells of his boyhood in Kansas and how he and his parents and brothers would spend time in their cyclone cellar. One time his father opened the door just a crack to see their house sailing right over them. It’s a privilege to live in Southwestern Colorado.”

25 years ago: “Former Durango Herald reporter Dave Curtin was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for a story in the Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph about a family’s will to survive after an explosion destroyed their home.”
