100 years ago: This appeared in the section called High School Notes: “The Toltec was given out to the pupils of the high school. In this month’s issue, several new designs appeared which are the work of Genevive Merry and Fred Freedlund of the senior class. Several well-written stories are contained in the number.”
75 years ago: “There will be Thanksgiving for a week this year, not just a day. A survey showed that 23 states will observe Thanksgiving the 23rd, in support of President Roosevelt, and 20 states will observe the traditional date, the last Thursday of the month. Five states will observe both dates.”
50 years ago: “One short year ago, when the first bulletin was put forth concerning the shooting of President Kennedy, residents were engaged in their usual daily routine. But none will forget where and how they first heard the word. Myron Darmour had just entered the West building to meet Dave Steele and go on to a Shrine lunch. Dr. John Emerich stopped them with the news and they went into the barber shop there to listen to the radio for a few minutes. During the lunch Earl Barker came in to announce to the group that the president had expired.”
25 years ago: “Purgatory Ski Area will not open Wednesday as planned because of unusually warm nighttime temperatures. The only skiing available in Southwest Colorado this Thanksgiving weekend will be man-made snow at Telluride.”
