And the West is History

100 years ago: “Richard Turner of the Animas Valley was in the city with apples and hay for the local market.”

75 years ago: “Trains are still blocked from the trip over the ‘hump’ on the D&RGW by a snowstorm in progress on Cumbres Pass.”

50 years ago: An advertisement for Basin Rexall Drug, 863 Main Ave., read: “Feb. 14 give Pangburn’s Valentine Hearts. The Valentine she loves. A beautiful Valentine Heart says, ‘I love you,’ as no other gift can say it. And when the Heart you give is packed with Pangburn’s Milk-and-Honey Chocolates, you are given the finest that money can buy.”

25 years ago: “La Plata Community Hospital employees can’t talk to reporters unless Chief Executive Officer Tom Mitchell approves, according to a new administrative policy. Mitchell signed the ‘Media Interviews Policy’ Jan. 31 after a Jan. 12 Durango Herald article that quoted hospital department heads.”
