100 years ago: “Lou Smith, the dry-ranch farmer of Reservoir Hill, will exhibit a large display of the products of his dry-farming methods at the agricultural meetings. He is said to have some of the finest grains, etc., ever grown on lands of this kind.”

75 years ago: “The Durango Public Library placed 46 new books in circulation last week. Titles included Western Union by Zane Grey and Over My Dead Body by Rex Stout.”

50 years ago: “Both Mercy and Community hospital pediatric wards are crowded with babies and small children afflicted with the upper respiratory virus infection that is prevalent in the Denver area and northern Colorado right now. Dr. Joseph Browning, Durango pediatrician, said that there is a mild epidemic here, but that there are no complications from the virus.”

25 years ago: “Specialized Bicycle Components and Purgatory Ski Resort have announced gold sponsorships of $35,000 each for the 1990 World Mountain Bike Championships to be held in Durango Sept. 11-16. Purgatory will be the site of the main events for the world championship, including the downhill, hill climb and cross country races, and will also provide meals and accommodations for athletes wanting to stay in the area.”
