This picture appeared in the Sept. 4, 1988, Herald. The cutline read: “This B-17G World War II bomber, Texas Raiders, will be on display this week at the Durango-La Plata County Airport as it makes a stopover between airshows in Utah and New Mexico. The B-17G, one of only a half-dozon or so now flying, is owned and operated by the Gulf Coast wing of the Confederate Air Force.”

100 years ago: “Earl and Guy Akin were passengers on the southern train coming from the La Platas. They have been doing development work all summer upon their claims in that country but have finally been driven out by the snow. They expect to leave for their home at Creede where they will join their parents.”

75 years ago: “An announcement by William Hansberger owner of the Molas Mine, four miles south of Silverton was to the effect that the leaser of the mines, expects to begin shipping ore within 30 days.”

50 years ago: This appeared in the section called Panther’s Pulse: “A weight-lifting club will be started after football season, according to Coach Jim Englehart. He believes the exercises will help keep the boys in shape for next year.”

25 years ago: “The gas and ranching industries are throwing their weight – and their money – behind the Republican candidates for La Plata County commissioner. But J.Paul Brown, the Republican challenging Democrat Bill Westendorff for the District 3 seat, has won three times more gas industry support than Jeff Bryson, the other Republican candidate. Eight gas-industry companies have contributed a total of $1,700 to Brown’s campaign.”
