100 years ago: “B. F. Simonson, of the Florida Mesa, brought in a coyote hide for the bounty and immediately went across the hall from the treasurers office and spent the proceeds for two hunting licenses.”
75 years ago: “Trust Frank Nelson to get one of the ‘big ones’ first time he throws out his line. He won’t admit it, but he must hang a sign on his hook warning all fish under two pounds to wait until they grow up.”
50 years ago: “Don Kennedy of the San Juan National Forest reports that to date this year there have been 16 forest fires, 11 of them caused by lightening and five by man. There has been approximately 75 acres of forest land burned.”
25 years ago: “The gates will shut on the Van-Dal Landfill one mile west of Durango and will remain closed until the city of Durango reopens the landfill, possibly in July. The La Plata County commissioners posted notice of the closing weeks ago, and they intend to keep their threat. ... The city has agreed to take over Van-Dal management but negotiations with Van-Dal Enterprises to continue services could take until July 1.”
