100 years ago: “Bob Gillispie, the military expert of the Kline district, was in town with his whiskers to get supplies and visit sociable friends.”

75 years ago: “One of two inevitable things of life – taxes – confronts the citizenry of La Plata County. Today and tomorrow are the last days for La Plata County taxpayers to pay their first half taxes without penalties.”

50 years ago: “Contracts will be let in Denver soon for sewer and water facilities for Colorado’s second Job Corps camp, located six miles northwest of Pagosa Springs on the Piedra Road. Building is expected to start within two months for a June 15 occupation deadline. The Job Corpsmen assigned to the camp will do soil conservation and rehabilitation work on 2,000 acres of land and build additional recreational facilities in the area.”

25 years ago: “What’s the biggest worry for eighth- and ninth-graders entering high school next year? Getting lost. The best part about starting high school next year? Meeting more girls. Those were two of the most popular answers in a survey conducted by the high school’s peer helpers to determine what concerns eighth- and ninth-grade students at Miller and Smiley junior highs have about transferring to the high school.”
