And the West is History

100 years ago: “The crowd at the Colorado-New Mexico Fair was easily the feature of the fair events, with the streets being crowded during the forenoon and the fairgrounds black with people during the afternoon. The street cars handled several thousand people to and from the grounds and the auto livery men did a rushing business.”

75 years ago: “Dr. Leo W. Lloyd, La Plata County Health Officer, said that unless further infantile paralysis cases develop in that area, the quarantine of the Vallecito Dam section will officially be lifted. The quarantine was established eight days ago.”

50 years ago: This appeared in the section called Girl About Town: “It will be interesting to find out how many long dresses will be worn to the Tuesday Literary Club dance. There has been much discussion as to who will and who won’t.”

25 years ago: “By taking advantage of a projected 11 percent increase in revenues and holding the line on most department budgets, the La Plata County commissioners expect to fund their four priorities next year. According to the 1990 proposed budget, the commissioners would fund a 3 percent cost-of-living increase for county employees, the first phase of a courthouse remodel at $800,000, a $100,000 computer mapping system and continued weed control.”
