And the West is History

100 years ago: “C. W. Bloodgood, the fancy egg man from the Animas Valley, was in town with his usual basket of eggs, and Mrs. Bloodgood came along to pick up a few holiday bargains.”

75 years ago: “Business in Durango is still on a sharp upturn, and the city is crowded with people who are shopping for Christmas gifts. Stocks on Christmas selections are moving rapidly and, in many cases, re-orders have been made several times.”

50 years ago: “The city planning commission voted to recommend to the city council that Florida avenue north of the Calvary Baptist Church be renamed to Forest avenue to conform with the same thoroughfare to the south.

25 years ago: “The Colorado Department of Highways and area residents hope traffic lights at the dangerous Elmore’s Store intersection five miles east of Durango on U.S. Highway 160 will make driving safer and less frustrating. The $90,500 signal lights will be turned on possibly as soon as this week, marking a victory for the San Juan Citizens Alliance, the local advocacy group that persuaded the highway department to install the lights.”
