100 years ago: SILVERTON – “The Southern Exploration Company of which Frank B. Goudy of Chattanooga was manager apparently has failed to provide funds to meet the last issue of paychecks and 30 employees are here today unable to get their money. The affairs of the company are believed to be in bad shape.”

75 years ago: “Electric power was for the first time turned into the 3½ mile rural extension line up the east side of the Animas Valley.”

50 years ago: “Three days before Christmas, retail sales in Durango are running about equal to or just a touch behind a year ago. Merchants are hoping that last minute sales will put the figures definitely ahead for the season which began late this year because of the closeness of Thanksgiving and the assassination of President Kennedy.”

25 years ago: “Purgatory Ski Resort officials, unhappy with rumors that ski conditions are less than desirable, sounded an upbeat note for reporters. Ski conditions at Purgatory ‘are as good as or better than any other destination ski resort in the state of Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona.’”
