And the West is History

100 years ago: “Eugene Heth, one of the best known and sensational aviators of the country, will fly here. Heth, in his first days of flying, was known as ‘Wild Bill’ Heth, because of the many chances he took in developing the thrills of the game.”

75 years ago: “Grandma Day, sometimes but rarely called Victoria S. Day, of Sunnyside will celebrate her 90th birthday Sept. 30.”

50 years ago: “A beautiful scene of the golden aspens between Durango and Silverton was in full color on the front page of the Rocky Mountain News.”

25 years ago: “The news came as no surprise, but it was welcome nonetheless. Durango has been selected as host for the 1990 World Mountain Bike Championships. The championships are expected to attract 800 to 1,000 competitors plus an additional 2,500-plus support personnel and spectators, as well as bringing in close to $1 million to the local economy.”
