And the West is History

100 years ago: “The botany class of the high school had interesting work in the laboratory of Prof. Holden. They had collected a considerable number of plant cells, and the class examined the specimens with the aid of microscopes, then made drawings of what they saw to finally fix it in their minds. At least that’s what they were told to do.”

75 years ago: “H.H. Jeffrey is now back on the job at his jewelry store after a vacation of 10 days which he and Mrs. Jeffrey spent in California. They attended the Rose Bowl game, took in the horse races at Santa Anita and toured Death Valley.”

50 years ago: “One of the most interesting men to visit Southwest Colorado in recent years is to speak at an all-College assembly at Fort Lewis. He is L.P.F. L’Estrange, Her Majesty’s consul from Denver. A ruddy complexioned man, with a huge mustache, a sharp sense of humor and a lively interest in everything around him, L’Estrange will talk about four trouble spots with which he has had firsthand experience – Venezuela, British Guiana, Borneo, and Cyprus.”

25 years ago: “J. Paul Brown won the unanimous nod as chairman from his fellow La Plata County commissioners, one hour after 6th Judicial Court Judge Al Haas swore him and Doris Brennan into office. The commissioners named Brennan vice chair. Bud Deering, who has two years remaining in his term, stepped down as chairman.”
